Frequently Asked Questions

Why are Habitat Screens installed on the outside of the windows? Habitat Screens are installed on the outside of windows so that they can stop the sun’s heat and glare before it reaches the glass. Unlike interior window treatments that offer only shade and privacy, Habitat Screens are a proactive defense against solar heat gain as well.

What is the screen made of? Select Rollshutters uses two types of fabrics for our Habitat Screens. Thermoscreen® made by 3G Mermet is a unique PVC coated fiberglass fabric that is designed to absorb and reflect the sun’s heat and glare.   Thermoscreen® is available in 6% and 14% openness. SunTex 80® made by Phifer is a polyester coated vinyl material that is available in 20% openness. Both fabrics are very durable, provide excellent protection from the sun’s heat and glare and look great.

How large can the Habitat Screens be made? The maximum dimensions for Habitat Screens are 19’8 wide and 12′ tall.

Can you see through the screen? Yes. This is what makes Habitat Screens so practical and appealing. Because the screen material is available in a variety of weave densities, you can block the heat and glare of the sun’s rays, without sacrificing your view. During the day, Habitat Screens offer excellent privacy, and at night, others looking in can only see silhouettes.

What color of screen material is easiest to see through? Dark colors absorb most of the sun’s light and glare, and light colors reflect light back to your eyes; therefore, dark colors are easiest to see through.

Can Habitat Screens be used on porches? Yes. Habitat Screens are the ideal solution for creating shade, privacy and insect protection for patios, gazebos, and decks.

How do Habitat Screens protect me from insects? Select Rollshutters’ unique edge retention system uses a zipper system that keeps the screen in a track and prevents insects from entering your home or patio while the screen is in the down position.

What happens if Habitat Screens are left in the down position in high winds? Select Rollshutters does not recommend that you operate your Habitat Screens in windy conditions.   Habitat Screens are intended to provide solar protection, not wind protection.  However, Select Rollshutters’ unique screen edge retention system allows you to keep your screens down in light winds without blowing out of the guide rails.  If you live in a windy area, we recommend that you purchase a wind sensor that will automatically retract your Habitat Screen when it gets windy.
