Are you anxious to start growing this year’s vegetable garden? Calgary has such a short growing season and this spring seems to be arriving at a snail’s pace. It’s no wonder many gardeners choose to start growing their vegetables indoors in the early spring and then transfer the plants to their outdoor garden once the snow thaws and frost warnings cease. All you need is a sunny space.
A sunroom vegetable garden can do more than just help you start your seedlings. They can provide freshly grown vegetables for your family all year round. Grow root vegetables, salad veggies and add some flavour to your cooking with freshly grown herbs. Whether you’re starting an outdoor garden indoors or starting an indoor garden to stay there, a huge variety of vegetables can be grown in your sunroom vegetable garden.
Vegetables you can grow indoors include: tomatoes, radishes, red peppers, lettuces, carrots, green beans, onions, and various sprout varieties. Grow herbs like basil, rosemary, thyme, parsley, cilantro, and chives.
What You Need for a Sunroom Vegetable Garden
Large containers: You can use containers with water trays. Some have actually used large Rubbermaid bins with small holes punched through the bottom for drainage. Use the bin lid as a water tray. Alternatively, you could use a waste basket, aquarium, wash tub or large flower pot. You just have to make sure it’s large and deep enough to allow good root growth and that it also allows water drainage.
Potting soil: It’s best that you purchase new potting soil for your sunroom vegetable garden in order to avoid bringing any outdoor bugs or pests into your home.
Compost: Mix your compost in with your potting soil. Equal parts of each make a good mixture.
Vegetable seeds: Every vegetable has different growing requirements. Some need more space, more light, less water, etc. Make sure you do your research and follow the directions for each vegetable. Remember that this is an indoor garden so keep your veggie choices down to smaller vegetables.
Trellis: If you are growing vegetables that could be climbers like tomatoes, beans or peas make sure you have a decent trellis in your containers.
Water: Since your sunroom vegetable garden won’t get any natural precipitation (we hope not!) you’ll have to water it every day. The soil should be moist at least 1 inch deep at all times.
Sunlight: Your sunroom from Select Sunrooms Calgary will help you with this one! With all season sunrooms and plenty of designs to let in maximum natural light, your sunroom vegetable garden will have the sunny and warm environment it requires. Review the directions for specific vegetables to ensure they’re getting the light and heat they need. Plants that produce a vegetable (not just a leaf like herbs or lettuces) need at least 6 hours of sunlight a day to grow.
